Best Country to Migrate From India With Family in 2026

Imagine you are a software engineer in Pune. Your wife is a teacher. Your son is 7 and your daughter is 3. Your parents live 20 minutes away and help with school pickups. You earn well by Indian standards, but rent, school fees and coaching classes eat most of it. Colleagues keep leaving: one to Toronto, one to Munich, one to Dubai.

You are not moving alone. So the question is bigger than "where can I get a visa?" It is: where can my whole family land together, where can my wife work, where will the children go to school, and what happens to my parents?

The short answer: For most Indian families who want a permanent move, Canada is the strongest all-round choice, because one Express Entry application can make you, your spouse and your children permanent residents together. Australia pays more and also gives permanent residence to the whole family, but only if you are under 45 and score well. Germany is the best choice if you can get a job offer: your spouse can join without German, and settlement can come in 21 months. The UK is workable for higher-skilled jobs, but it is the most expensive per family member, and its settlement rules may get longer. The UAE is the fastest and closest, but it never gives permanent residence. Figures below are as of November 2026.

What "best for families" really means

A country that is great for a single 25-year-old can be hard for a family of four. Before you compare salaries, compare these five things:

  1. Does the whole family get the same status? Some routes make everyone a permanent resident at once. Others leave your spouse and children dependent on your job.
  2. Can your spouse work? Two incomes change everything in your first year.
  3. What do the children pay for school? Public school is free in most destinations for residents, but rules for temporary visas differ.
  4. What about your parents? Very few countries let parents move permanently. A few let them visit for long periods.
  5. How long until citizenship? That is when your family is finally safe from rule changes.

Think of it like buying a car for a family of four. Top speed matters less than seats, safety and running costs.

Which country would you qualify for?

6 quick questions on your age, skills and English. You get a score out of 100 and a read on each country you pick, on screen. No sign-up.

1. Canada: the whole family becomes permanent at once

Canada's biggest advantage for families is simple. If you are invited through Express Entry and approved, your spouse and children get permanent residence on the same day as you. Nobody depends on your employer. Your spouse can take any job, and your children go to public school like Canadian children.

What it costs. IRCC charges C$1,590 for you and C$1,590 for your spouse (both include the right of permanent residence fee), plus C$270 for each dependent child. For a family of four, that is C$4,720, plus biometrics of C$170 for the family (IRCC fee list, checked November 2026).

Proof of funds. If you apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program without a valid job offer, you must show settlement money. IRCC's table asks for C$28,362 for a family of four (IRCC, checked November 2026). It must be your own money in the bank, not property and not a loan. You must count your spouse and children even if they stay in India. Our proof of funds calculator works it out for your family size.

The new points rules. From 3 November 2026, Canada brought back points for job offers, but only for "high-wage" occupations. A qualifying offer gives 50, 70 or 100 points, and no LMIA is needed. Canadian work experience can give up to 150 points instead. You get one or the other, not both (IRCC, 2026). Software engineers (NOC 21231) and software developers (NOC 21232) are on IRCC's high-wage list. Note that they are not in the STEM category list for targeted draws, which covers engineers like civil and mechanical (IRCC, November 2026).

Your parents. The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents visit you for up to 5 years at a time, with multiple entries for up to 10 years (IRCC, 2026). It is a long visit, not permanent residence, and you need to meet income and health insurance rules.

The catch. Canada caps permanent resident admissions at 380,000 a year under its 2026-2028 plan (IRCC), and the queue is competitive. Your score depends heavily on age, English and French. Check yours with our free CRS calculator. If you are a programmer, our guide on what to do when your CRS is below the cut-off is worth reading next.

Citizenship. You can apply after 1,095 days of physical presence in the 5 years before you apply (IRCC).

2. Australia: higher pay, but age matters most

Australia's Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is also a permanent visa, and your family can be included. That makes it the closest match to Canada.

What it costs. The main applicant charge is from A$6,135 from 1 July 2026, and each family member adds a further charge (Home Affairs, checked November 2026). Add a skills assessment and an English test.

The age wall. You must be invited before you turn 45, and you need at least 65 points, though real invitation scores are often much higher. A 38-year-old engineer and a 44-year-old engineer may have the same skills, but very different chances. Check where you stand before you spend money:

How much does your age really cost you?

At 42, you are not too old to migrate

Possible, with work

You are not too old. Age counts least against you in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. In Canada, age costs you 82 CRS points, so language and job category matter more.

Not sure how to close the gap?

A 60-minute plan check compares up to 3 countries and gives you a written roadmap in 48 hours.

$99 to book, $499 in total. Full refund if you cancel 24 hours before.

Your parents. Australia has parent visas, but Home Affairs says all of them are subject to "capping and queueing", with long processing times (Home Affairs). Do not plan on your parents joining quickly.

Citizenship. After 4 years living in Australia on a valid visa, including 12 months as a permanent resident (Home Affairs residence calculator).

Who it suits. Families with a main applicant under 40, strong English (PTE or IELTS) and an occupation on the skilled lists. Run your numbers in our Australia points calculator, and read our guide to the 189 and 190 visas.

3. Germany: best if you can get a job offer

Germany does not use points if you have a job. With a recognised degree and an offer paying at least €50,700 a year, you can get an EU Blue Card. The bar is €45,934.20 for shortage occupations (including many IT, engineering and health roles) and for graduates within 3 years of their degree (Make it in Germany, 2026 figures).

For families, three things stand out:

The catch. Daily life runs in German: school letters, the landlord, the doctor. Your spouse's career may need German too, especially teaching, which is a regulated profession. Citizenship now needs 5 years of residence. Germany ended its 3-year fast track in late October 2025 (Federal Interior Ministry).

4. United Kingdom: possible, but the most expensive per person

The UK Skilled Worker visa needs a job offer from a licensed sponsor, usually paying at least £41,700 or the going rate for the job, whichever is higher (GOV.UK, November 2026).

The family bill is the biggest of the five. Every family member pays the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. For a visa of up to 3 years applied for from India, the fee is £819 per person, and the surcharge is £1,035 a year per adult and £776 a year per child (GOV.UK; GOV.UK). For two adults and two children, that is about £14,142 up front. You also need to show £1,270 for yourself plus £285 for your partner, £315 for the first child and £200 for the second, unless your employer certifies maintenance (GOV.UK).

Check your job level first. Since 22 July 2025, people sponsored in "medium skilled" jobs generally cannot bring a partner or children from abroad (GOV.UK). Your employer can tell you your occupation code.

Settlement may get longer. Settlement (indefinite leave to remain) still usually comes after 5 years. The government has proposed a 10-year baseline, with 5 years kept for some higher earners and public sector health and teaching roles. As of November 2026 the final rules have not been published (House of Commons Library, September 2026). Our UK Skilled Worker visa guide covers the route step by step.

5. UAE: fastest and closest, but never permanent

Dubai is a short flight from Mumbai. Pay is tax-free, and many Indian families already live there. You can sponsor your family if you earn at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation (UAE government portal, 2026).

But the UAE does not give permanent residence or citizenship to most residents. Your family's status is tied to your visa. When the job ends, the clock starts. Private school fees can also be high. The UAE works well as a 5 to 10 year savings plan, not as a forever home. Our UAE work visa process guide explains each step.

What about the USA?

For many Indian families the USA is the dream, but for a first move it is the slowest. Employment green cards have per-country limits. In the November 2026 Visa Bulletin, the final action date for India in the EB-2 category was 1 November 2013 (US Department of State Visa Bulletin). That means people who started the process in 2013 are only now reaching the front. If you are already on an H-1B, that is a different decision.

The India-side paperwork families forget

Your destination checks your papers, but India has its own steps:

Which country fits your family?

  • You want everyone permanent from day one: Canada or Australia.
  • The main applicant is over 44: not Australia's 189. Look at Canada (age points drop, but there is no hard cap) or a job offer in Germany.
  • You already have a job offer in Europe: Germany, for the 21-month settlement and the spouse rules.
  • Your spouse's career matters as much as yours: Canada or Australia, where your spouse is a permanent resident with full work rights.
  • You want to stay close to your parents: the UAE (a short flight away) or Canada, with the Super Visa for long visits.
  • You want to save hard for 5 years, then decide: the UAE.

Ask yourself one honest question: in five years, do you want your family to be safe from the next rule change? If yes, choose a route that ends in permanent residence.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is easiest to migrate to from India with family?

For permanent residence, Canada's Express Entry is usually the most open, because it includes your spouse and children in one application and has no hard age limit. For a quick move, the UAE is easiest, but it gives no permanent residence.

Can my wife or husband work if we move abroad?

In Canada and Australia, yes, if you arrive as permanent residents. In Germany, a spouse joining a skilled worker can work. In the UK, a partner on a dependant visa can work, but only higher-skilled job holders can bring a partner from abroad. In the UAE, your spouse needs their own work permit.

Can I take my parents with me?

Usually not permanently at first. Canada's Super Visa lets parents visit for up to 5 years at a time. Most other countries have very limited or very slow parent routes.

How much money does an Indian family of four need to move to Canada?

About C$4,720 in IRCC fees plus C$170 for biometrics, and C$28,362 in settlement funds if you apply without a valid job offer. Add tests, medical exams, document costs and flights.

Is the UK still good for Indian families?

It can be, if your job is higher skilled and well paid. But every family member pays the visa fee and the health surcharge, and settlement may move from 5 years towards 10 years for many people.
