Europe Β· Migration Guide
How to Migrate to Sweden
Sweden pairs a genuinely innovative, English-friendly economy with one of Europe's most generous welfare states and a startup scene that punches far above its weight. For non-EU professionals the main door is a work permit tied to a job offer, and since November 2023 that offer must pay at least a defined maintenance salary β a threshold the government has been raising to steer immigration toward skilled roles. Get the offer right and the rest of the process is largely digital and predictable.

Why migrate to Sweden?
Sweden offers high wages, strong worker protections and a flat, consensus-driven work culture with a real focus on work-life balance β think a 40-hour week, generous holiday and some of the world's best parental leave. English is spoken almost everywhere, so many professionals build careers without fluent Swedish, especially in tech, engineering and life sciences. Home to Spotify, Klarna, Ericsson and a dense startup ecosystem, Stockholm and Gothenburg reward technical talent. Free healthcare and education, subsidised childcare and clean, safe cities make it a strong choice for families. The trade-offs are high taxes, a competitive rental market and long, dark winters.
Visa pathways to Sweden
Work permit (job offer route)
Best for: Any non-EU professional with a Swedish job offer
Timeline: 1β4 months
Sweden's core route. You need a concrete offer advertised in the EU/EEA for at least 10 days, terms matching Swedish collective agreements, and a gross salary at or above the maintenance requirement (raised to 80% of the median salary β around SEK 29,680/month in 2025 β with a move toward the full median planned).
EU Blue Card
Best for: University-educated highly qualified specialists
Timeline: 1β3 months
For degree-holders with a job or binding offer of at least 6 months and a salary meeting the Blue Card threshold (roughly 1.25β1.5x the average, higher than the standard work permit). Offers EU-wide mobility and counts strongly toward long-term residence.
Fast-track (certified employer) work permit
Best for: Hires at employers using a certified agent/operator
Timeline: 2β4 weeks
Migrationsverket's certified-employer track speeds decisions for complete applications filed through certified operators (often large firms or relocation agents). Same salary and collective-agreement rules apply, but processing is markedly faster.
Job-seeker / highly qualified residence permit
Best for: Graduates and specialists seeking work in Sweden
Timeline: 1β3 months
Lets highly qualified people (a completed advanced degree and sufficient funds) enter to look for work or explore starting a business for 3β9 months. You then switch to a work permit or Blue Card once hired.
Self-employment / business permit
Best for: Entrepreneurs and founders running their own company
Timeline: 3β6 months
For those establishing or buying into a Swedish business. You must show relevant experience, significant capital to run the venture and support yourself and family for two years, and prove the business will be profitable.
Step by step: how to move to Sweden
- 1
Secure a qualifying Swedish job offer
Almost all work routes need an employer. Target roles in tech, engineering, life sciences and healthcare via LinkedIn, ArbetsfΓΆrmedlingen (Platsbanken), The Local's job board and company career pages. Confirm the salary clears the maintenance requirement and matches collective-agreement terms.
- 2
Employer prepares and submits the offer
Your Swedish employer creates the formal offer of employment in Migrationsverket's system, gives the relevant union a chance to comment on the terms, and confirms insurance cover (health, life, occupational and pension). The role must have been advertised in the EU/EEA for at least 10 days.
- 3
Submit your application online
Apply through Migrationsverket's e-service, attach your passport and supporting documents, and pay the fee. Applications filed via a certified employer or operator are prioritised and typically decided fastest.
- 4
Provide biometrics if required
If you are outside Sweden, you visit a Swedish embassy or consulate to give fingerprints and a photo for your residence permit card once the application is progressing or approved.
- 5
Receive your decision and permit card
Once approved, your residence and work permit card is produced and sent to you or the mission where you gave biometrics. It confirms you can live and work in Sweden on the terms of your permit.
- 6
Register with Skatteverket after arrival
On arrival, register with the Swedish Tax Agency to obtain a personnummer (personal number) β the key to banking, healthcare and daily life. Our Sweden arrival guide covers the full first-week checklist.
Requirements
- A valid passport and, for work routes, a concrete job offer or contract from a Swedish employer
- Employment terms (salary, insurance, holiday) at least matching Swedish collective agreements
- A gross salary meeting the maintenance requirement or the higher Blue Card threshold
- The vacancy advertised in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least 10 days (standard work permit)
- Proof you can support yourself and any accompanying family members
- For regulated professions (e.g. healthcare), recognition/licensing by Socialstyrelsen

Language & tests
There is no language test for work permits or the EU Blue Card β Sweden is among the most English-fluent non-native countries in the world, and tech, engineering and research workplaces routinely operate in English. Swedish matters more over time: it is often essential in healthcare, care, teaching and public-facing roles, and Sweden has introduced language and civics requirements for permanent residence and citizenship. Free or subsidised Swedish courses (SFI, Swedish for Immigrants) are available once you register with a municipality.
What it costs to migrate
Sweden's official permit fees are moderate and the whole process runs online through Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency). Your real costs are relocation, qualification recognition where needed, and setting up a home in a tight rental market β deposits and first months' rent add up quickly in Stockholm and Gothenburg.
Path to permanent residency & citizenship
There is no fixed short PR timeline for non-EU workers; most secure long-term status via the EU long-term resident permit after five years of continuous legal residence with stable income. Reforms are tightening rules, adding language and knowledge-of-society tests and self-support conditions for permanent residence. Citizenship generally requires around five years of habitual residence (shorter for Nordic citizens, longer under proposed reforms toward eight years), a settled way of life, and β under new rules being phased in β a Swedish language and civics test. Sweden permits dual citizenship, so you usually need not renounce your original nationality.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to speak Swedish to work in Sweden?
Not for most skilled jobs. Swedish workplaces in tech, engineering, life sciences and research frequently operate in English, and Sweden ranks among the world's most English-fluent countries. However, Swedish is important for healthcare, care and public-facing roles, and language and civics tests are being introduced for permanent residence and citizenship, so learning it matters long term.
What is the easiest visa route to Sweden?
For most people it is the standard work permit: with a Swedish job offer that meets the maintenance salary requirement and matches collective-agreement terms, you qualify regardless of your field. If your employer uses a certified operator, the fast-track can produce a decision in a few weeks. University-educated specialists may prefer the EU Blue Card for its EU-wide mobility benefits.
How much do I need to earn to get a Swedish work permit?
Your gross salary must meet the maintenance requirement, which the government set at 80% of the median salary (around SEK 29,680/month in 2025) and has signalled it may raise toward the full median. Your terms must also match Swedish collective agreements. The EU Blue Card requires a notably higher salary threshold.
Does Sweden allow dual citizenship?
Yes. Sweden permits dual (and multiple) citizenship, so naturalising as a Swedish citizen generally does not require giving up your original nationality β though you should confirm that your home country also allows it.
