Ahpra Registration for UK and Irish Nurses: The Streamlined Pathway, Step by Step
Imagine you are a staff nurse on an acute medical ward in Birmingham. Or you trained in Cebu, passed the NMC test of competence and have worked in the NHS for three years. Or you are an Irish nurse in Galway, tired of the rent. A friend in Perth says Australia "fast-tracks UK nurses now". Is that true, and what do you actually have to do?
The short answer: Yes. Since 23 April 2025, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has a registration standard that lets many NMC and NMBI registered nurses register through Ahpra without NMBA exams or a qualification upgrade. The UK and Ireland are on the list of "comparable jurisdictions", with the United States, Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), Singapore and Spain. You need at least 1,800 hours of practice as a registered nurse in one of those places since 1 January 2017, plus Australia's normal standards for English, criminal history, recency of practice and insurance. The NMBA says eligible nurses may finish in 1 to 6 months, against 9 to 12 months for the standard route (NMBA standard and media release, checked November 2026).
Registration is not a visa. You need both, and we cover the visa side below.
Which pathway are you on?
The standard has two pathways. Which one fits depends on where you first qualified, not your passport.
| Pathway 1 | Pathway 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Nurses who trained in the UK, Ireland or another comparable jurisdiction | Nurses who trained elsewhere (for example India, the Philippines, Nigeria) and then registered in the UK or Ireland |
| Qualification | Led to registration in a comparable jurisdiction | Initial nursing qualification completed on or after 1 January 2017 |
| Extra step | None | Passed that jurisdiction's own exam process for overseas nurses, for example the NMC test of competence |
| Practice | At least 1,800 hours as a registered nurse in a comparable jurisdiction since 1 January 2017 | Same |
| NMBA exams | Not needed | Not needed |

1,800 hours is roughly one year of full-time work. Ask yourself: can you prove your hours with payslips or a letter from your trust or hospital?
Pathway 2 has a hard date. If you first qualified before 1 January 2017, Ahpra's fact sheet says you are not eligible under Pathway 2, even with years in the NHS. You can still register through the standard assessment route.
Single-field UK registration. If your NMC registration is only in mental health, children's or learning disabilities nursing, check the Self-check result carefully before you plan a move. Ahpra decides how your qualification fits.
The steps, in order
Step 1: do the Ahpra Self-check
Ahpra's online Self-check for internationally qualified nurses and midwives asks about your qualification, registration and practice. It tells you which pathway or stream to follow. It is the official start. Do it before you pay any agency or book any exam.
Step 2: check the English standard
The NMBA English language standard applies to every first-time applicant. If your schooling and nursing degree were taught and assessed in English in a country Ahpra recognises, you may meet it through education. If not, you need an accepted test such as IELTS Academic or OET at the NMBA's scores. Our guide to OET or IELTS for healthcare registration explains the difference. Check the current score table on the NMBA site before you book, because it was revised in 2025.
Step 3: collect evidence of registration and practice
- your NMC PIN or NMBI registration details, and a certificate of current professional status or good standing where Ahpra asks for it
- proof of 1,800 hours: employer letters with dates, hours and role, plus payslips
- your nursing qualification and transcript
- identity documents and certified copies in the format Ahpra asks for
Regulators often send verification straight to Ahpra. Request it early. It can be the slowest part.
Step 4: apply and pay the fees
Apply through your Ahpra account and pay the fees for your pathway. Ahpra publishes the current amounts on the NMBA fees page. Fees change each year, so pay only what that page and your Ahpra account show.
Step 5: complete the orientation
Internationally qualified nurses complete Ahpra's online orientation to the Australian health system. Your Self-check outcome and your account tell you which parts to do and when.

Then the visa: registration alone does not let you move
Registered nurses are on the lists that most skilled visas use. As of November 2026:
- Registered nurse occupations are on the Core Skills Occupation List, which the employer-sponsored Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa uses (legislative instrument LIN 24/089, compilation of 7 November 2025).
- They are also on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, used by the points-tested 189 and 190 visas (LIN 19/051, compilation of 28 March 2026). The skills assessing authority for nurses is ANMAC.
| Visa | What it is | Key rules (November 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Subclass 482, Core Skills stream | Employer-sponsored, up to 4 years | Sponsor's nomination, at least 1 year of relevant work experience, salary at least the Core Skills Income Threshold of A$79,423 for nominations from 1 July 2026 |
| Subclass 189 | Permanent, points-tested, no sponsor | Invitation, under 45 when invited, at least 65 points, competent English, positive skills assessment |
| Subclass 190 | Permanent, state-nominated | Same points test, plus a state or territory nomination |

Some nurses get a job offer and a 482 first. Others apply for 189 or 190 for permanent residence from the start. Our Australia skilled visa 189 vs 190 guide explains the points test. Check your score with the free Australia points calculator.

How long and how much: be realistic
The NMBA's 1 to 6 month estimate is for registration only. Add the visa time and your notice period. A typical order looks like this:
- Self-check and documents
- Ahpra application and registration
- Job search and offer, or skills assessment and visa application
- Visa decision, then travel
Our guide to overseas nurse sequencing explains why the order matters. If you have not chosen a country yet, compare NMC and Ahpra registration side by side.
Watch out for paid "guaranteed" registration
Some agents sell "guaranteed Ahpra" packages. No agent can guarantee an Ahpra decision. The Self-check is free, and the application is yours to make. Before you pay anyone for visa help in Australia, check they are a registered migration agent. Our guide on how to check a migration agent is licensed shows how.
Frequently asked questions
Can UK nurses register in Australia without the OSCE?
Yes, if they meet Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 of the NMBA standard for internationally qualified registered nurses. The UK is a comparable jurisdiction. You need at least 1,800 hours of registered nurse practice there since 1 January 2017, plus the usual standards for English, recency, criminal history and insurance.
Does NMBI registration count for Ahpra?
Yes. Ireland is a comparable jurisdiction, so nurses registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland can use the streamlined standard if they meet the hours and other rules.
I trained in the Philippines and work in the NHS. Can I use the fast-track?
Possibly, under Pathway 2. You must have completed your initial nursing qualification on or after 1 January 2017, passed the NMC's process for overseas nurses, and practised at least 1,800 hours in a comparable jurisdiction. If you qualified before 2017, the standard assessment route applies.
How long does Ahpra registration take for UK nurses?
The NMBA says eligible nurses may complete registration in 1 to 6 months, depending on the case and how complete the documents are. The visa is a separate process with its own timeline.
Do I need a job offer before applying to Ahpra?
No. Registration comes first. Many employers prefer candidates who are already registered or close to it.
Is Ahpra registration the same as a visa?
No. Ahpra registration lets you practise as a nurse. The Department of Home Affairs grants visas. You need both.
This article is general information, not legal advice. Ahpra decides registration, and the Department of Home Affairs decides visas. Always confirm with the official source and a licensed lawyer or registered migration agent before you act.
