Germany Opportunity Card Total Cost: Visa, Blocked Account and Rupees
Imagine you are a mechanical engineer in Pune with four years of experience. A friend in Stuttgart tells you about the Chancenkarte, Germany's Opportunity Card: "Just go, find a job there, the visa is only €75." Your father asks the real question: "How much money do we need before you get on the plane?"
The short answer: The visa fee is only €75, but the biggest cost is proof that you can support yourself: a blocked account with at least €1,091 per month in 2026, which is €13,092 for the full 12 months, or a formal declaration of commitment from someone in Germany (Make it in Germany, checked November 2026). Add a recognition check for your degree (for example €208 for a ZAB Statement of Comparability), a language certificate, health insurance and flights. For an applicant from India, the fixed official costs alone come to about ₹14.2 lakh, and most of that is your own money, which you spend on living costs in Germany.
What you are paying for
The Opportunity Card (Section 20a of the Residence Act) lets you live in Germany for up to one year to look for qualified work. You can work part-time up to 20 hours a week while you search and do trial work of up to two weeks per employer (Make it in Germany, November 2026). That part-time work matters for your budget, but do not count on it before you have it.
There are two ways to qualify:
- Your qualification is fully recognised in Germany. Then you do not need points.
- You score at least 6 points and have a qualification recognised in the country where you got it, plus German at A1 or English at B2.
Check your points first with our free Opportunity Card points calculator. Then read our Opportunity Card application guide.

A blocked account is not a fee. It is your own money, locked in a German bank account and released to you each month. Think of it as paying your own salary for a year in advance.

Worked example: an engineer from India
This example uses the European Central Bank reference rate of 30 October 2026: €1 = ₹106.084 (ECB). Your bank's rate will be a little worse.
| Item | Euros | About in rupees |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee | €75 | ₹7,956 |
| ZAB Statement of Comparability | €208 | ₹22,065 |
| Blocked account, 12 x €1,091 | €13,092 | ₹13,88,852 |
| Fixed official costs | €13,375 | ₹14,18,874 |
Then add the costs that depend on you: your language test, health insurance, the blocked account provider's fees, translations, a flight and a rent deposit. Get real quotes for each before you decide. Ask yourself: if the search takes the full 12 months, do you have a cushion beyond the blocked account?

The declaration of commitment: the other way to show funds
Instead of a blocked account, someone in Germany can sign a formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) to cover your living costs (Make it in Germany). It is a serious legal promise for that person. They are agreeing to pay your costs, so only ask someone who understands that and can afford it.
What is the success rate?
We could not find an official success rate or refusal rate for the Opportunity Card published by the German government as of November 2026. If a website or agent quotes one, ask where it comes from. What you can control is the quality of your file: a recognised qualification, proof of the points you claim, language evidence and funds.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Check anabin first. If your university and degree already show a positive result, you may not need the €208 Statement of Comparability.
- Raise your points honestly. German at B1 gives 2 points and B2 gives 3. Experience and age also count.
- Start the job search before you fly. Make it in Germany has a job listing service. A job offer before you land means a shorter, cheaper search.
- Compare blocked account providers on their own pricing pages before you open one.
- Do not pay for a "guaranteed" job. Read how to verify an overseas job offer.
If your profession is regulated in Germany, such as nursing, medicine or engineering titles, you may also need full recognition later, which has its own fees. Our guides on mechanical engineer recognition and electrician recognition show what that involves. The Germany migration guide covers the work visas you can switch to once you find a job.
