Best Country to Immigrate to From South Africa in 2026
Imagine you are an electrician in Durban. You are 36, married, with two children in a good school. Work is steady, but you spend more each year on things the state should provide: a generator, a water tank, a security company, a medical aid that keeps going up. Your brother-in-law moved to Perth in 2022. Your old school friend is in London, and says his gran was born in Leeds.
You are not running away. You want to know which country would give your family the most for the effort, and which route you actually qualify for.
The short answer: If you have a grandparent born in the UK, the UK Ancestry visa is often the simplest route of all: no job offer, no points test, and a path to settlement after 5 years. For skilled tradespeople and professionals under 45, Australia usually offers the best pay and lifestyle match, with permanent residence from day one on the 189 visa. Canada is the most open points system and gives your whole family permanent residence together. The Netherlands and Ireland suit professionals with a job offer in tech, finance or engineering. The UAE is the fastest way to earn tax-free, but it does not lead to permanent residence. Figures are as of November 2026.
Good news first: you can keep your South African citizenship
On 6 May 2025, South Africa's Constitutional Court declared section 6(1)(a) of the Citizenship Act invalid. That section used to strip adult South Africans of citizenship when they took another nationality without permission first (Democratic Alliance v Minister of Home Affairs, ZACC 8). For most people this means a second passport no longer costs you your South African one. Moving abroad does not have to mean cutting ties.

1 of 6 · When are you planning to move?
1. UK Ancestry: check your family tree first
If one of your grandparents was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, and you are a Commonwealth citizen (South Africans are), you may qualify for the UK Ancestry visa (GOV.UK).
- Cost: £726, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is usually £1,035 per adult per year.
- Length: 5 years. You can work in any job, full-time or part-time, employed or self-employed.
- Family: your partner and children can come with you.
- Speed: usually a decision within 3 weeks from outside the UK.
- Settlement: after 5 years on this visa, you may apply for indefinite leave to remain.
Two cautions. First, you need strong evidence: full birth certificates linking you, your parent and your grandparent. Second, the UK has proposed longer settlement periods for many routes. As of November 2026, the final rules are not published, so check how they apply to Ancestry when they are (House of Commons Library). See our guide to citizenship and residence by descent for other family-based routes.
No UK grandparent? The Skilled Worker visa needs a sponsor and usually £41,700 a year or the going rate (GOV.UK).
2. Australia: the best fit for many trades and professionals
Australia feels familiar to many South Africans: the outdoors, the sport, the climate. The 189 visa is permanent from day one and includes your partner and children.
- Cost: from A$6,135 for the main applicant, with extra charges for family members (Home Affairs, checked November 2026).
- Age: you must be invited before you turn 45.
- Points: 65 is the minimum, but real invitation scores are often higher. Run your numbers in the Australia points calculator.
- Skills assessment: your occupation must be assessed by the authority Home Affairs names for it. Tradespeople usually go through a practical and documentary assessment, so keep payslips, tax certificates and your trade certificate ready.
If you are close to the age cut-off, every month counts. Our guide am I too old to migrate? explains the age rules country by country. Tradespeople should also read our comparison of skilled trades in Australia and Canada.
3. Canada: the most open points system
Canada's Express Entry ranks you on age, education, English or French, and work experience. If invited and approved, your family become permanent residents together.
- Fees: C$1,590 for you and your spouse each, C$270 per child (IRCC fee list).
- Proof of funds: C$15,263 for one person, C$28,362 for a family of four, if you have no valid job offer (IRCC).
- Trades have their own draws. Electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters and heavy-duty mechanics are in the trade category, if you have 12 months of experience in the last 3 years, in Canada or abroad (IRCC).
Check your score with the free CRS calculator. If you want paid help with a Canadian application, use a licensed consultant or a lawyer. Check consultants on the CICC public register.
4. The Netherlands: English at work, Europe on the doorstep
The highly skilled migrant permit needs a recognised sponsor (employer) and a salary of at least €5,942 a month if you are 30 or older, or €4,357 if you are under 30 (2026 figures, IND). Many tech and finance teams work in English. After 5 years, you can apply for permanent residence if you pass the civic integration exam at level A2 (IND). If you are an engineer, read our comparison of take-home pay in Germany vs the Netherlands.
5. Ireland: English-speaking and in the EU
Ireland's Critical Skills Employment Permit is for jobs on its shortage list paying at least €40,904 a year (with a relevant degree), or any eligible job paying over €68,911 (Department of Enterprise). The permit fee is €1,000. After the permit, you can move to Stamp 4 permission, which lets you work without a permit, and after 60 months you can apply for long-term residence. Your spouse can also work. Our guide to Ireland's Critical Skills vs General permit explains the difference.
6. UAE: tax-free income, no permanent home
Dubai and Abu Dhabi hire South African engineers, finance staff, teachers and hospitality managers. Pay is tax-free, and home is a direct flight away. You can sponsor your family if you earn at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation (UAE government portal). But most residents never get permanent residence, so treat it as a savings stage. If you are already there, read leaving Dubai: where to move next.
Working remotely? Portugal is worth a look
If your employer lets you work remotely for a South African or foreign company, Portugal's digital nomad visa (D8) asks for income of four times the Portuguese minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage at €920 a month (Decreto-Lei 139/2025), that is about €3,680 a month. Note that Portugal raised the residence period for citizenship to 10 years for most non-EU nationals in May 2026 (Lei Orgânica 1/2026). Watch the tax side too: read the tax trap of remote work for a foreign company.
South African paperwork that slows people down
- Police clearance (SAPS). Most countries want a police clearance certificate from SAPS. The fee is R190 per application (SAPS). Apply early, because it can take weeks, and some visas need it to be recent. See police certificates for every country you have lived in.
- Qualifications. SAQA evaluates foreign qualifications for use in South Africa. It does not assess your South African degree for another country. Each destination uses its own assessor, so check which one your target country names for your job.
- Unabridged birth and marriage certificates. Many routes, especially UK Ancestry, need unabridged certificates from Home Affairs. Order them early.
- Moving money. Plan how you will move savings and retirement funds before you leave. Read taxes when you migrate abroad.
Which country fits you?
- You have a UK-born grandparent: start with UK Ancestry. It needs no job offer and no points.
- You are a tradesperson under 45: Australia first, Canada second.
- You are a professional with a job offer in Europe: the Netherlands or Ireland.
- You want your whole family to be permanent residents on arrival: Australia or Canada.
- You want to earn and save fast: the UAE, with a plan for what comes next.
Ask yourself: what would make the move worth it in 5 years? Safety, savings, a passport for your children, or a career step? Your answer points to the route.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest country to immigrate to from South Africa?
If you have a grandparent born in the UK, the UK Ancestry visa is usually the simplest because it needs no job offer or points. Without that, Canada's Express Entry is the most open points system, and Australia suits skilled workers under 45.
Can I keep my South African citizenship if I become a citizen elsewhere?
After the Constitutional Court's ruling of 6 May 2025, adult South Africans no longer automatically lose citizenship when they take another nationality. Check your own case with the Department of Home Affairs.
How much does the UK Ancestry visa cost?
£726 per application, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is usually £1,035 per adult for each year of the visa. Your partner and children pay their own fees.
Do I need a job offer to move to Australia from South Africa?
Not for the 189 visa. You need a positive skills assessment, enough points and an invitation before you turn 45. Employer-sponsored visas are another option if you have an offer.
How long does a SAPS police clearance take?
It varies. The fee is R190, but waiting times can be several weeks, so apply as soon as you know which country you are aiming for.
